Durham Miners’ Gala
This annual event, which takes place in the city centre, attracts thousands of people each year. Celebrations include a funfair, stalls, brass bands and marches, while union activists and campaign groups also gather at the event.
Speeches start around 12.30pm followed by a service in Durham Cathedral. Follow the parade of ‘The Big Meeting’ banners and brass bands on their traditional march through Durham’s streets to the Old Racecourse.
Once again the brass programme compliments the annual gathering, now in its 130th year.
The Gala celebrates the miners’ trade union and coal mining heritage relating to the Durham Coalfield, which stretched throughout the county.
