Where: Various locations, Whitley Bay and Cullercoats
For yet another year, cinephiles can indulge in all things celluloid as the Whitley Bay Film Festival returns for a spectacular four weeks of movie mania!
After the festival is launched with a screening of The Punch and Judy Man at the Rendezvous Café, there’s a range of cinematic delights on offer in various locations. A screening of Fritz Lang’s cult classic Metropolis will be performed with a new live electronic score, while classic Ealing comedy comes to The Station Masters Community Wildlife Garden in the form of The Titfield Thunderbolt.
Things get a bit more spooky with a screening of Night of the Living Dead at St Mary’s Lighthouse but if that’s not your cup of tea then maybe Dolly Parton’s classic screen debut Nine To Five might be more your thing (you even have to put on your best office wear!)
There’s a host of events celebrating the North and its connections too. Whitley Bay to Prague is a special event being held at St Mary’s Lighthouse, while BBC Newcastle will be hosting The Kinetoscope 2, a series of short film screenings from the BBC Archives. These clips will include rarely seen footage of comedian Bobby Thompson live on stage as well as clips from the late Muhammad Ali’s feted trip to South Shields.
With so much on offer, there’s a movie-going experience for every cinema fan to enjoy.
