Tis the season to be jolly and what better way to have a laugh and get into the Christmas spirit than with a Pantomime? This year the region is once again hosting a range of amazing pantomimes at a variety of venues. Here’s a roundup of some of the best on offer this year!
Aladdin @ Sunderland Empire
Friday 11th December – Sunday 3rd January
The most mystical pantomime of all time, Aladdin, flies in on a magic carpet to the Sunderland Empire this Christmas with a sparkling cast!
From Weatherfield to Peking, Coronation Street’s Terence Maynard (Tony Stewart) is set to stir up a storm on stage when he takes on the role Abanazar, alongside TV favourite Alison Hammond (ITV’s This Morning, Strictly Come Dancing, Big Brother) as the Slave of the Ring, and children’s TV presenter Derek Moran (Channel 5’s Milkshake).
From the producers behind Peter Pan 2012, Cinderella 2013, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 2014, come and see this gem of a pantomime for all the family. Filled with adventure, mystique, stunning sets and costumes, comedy, song and dance and lots of audience participation – Aladdin guarantees another Christmas extravaganza!
Cinderella @ Gala Theatre, Durham
Thursday 26th November – Sunday 3rd January
Created in the heart of Durham, Gala’s fabulous family pantomime tells the enchanting rags-to-riches story of Cinderella.
Cinders is confined to the kitchen, and being picked on by her Ugly Sisters. With a little help from her Fairy Godmother she hopes to win the heart of a handsome prince. With ball gowns, glass slippers and a few surprises thrown in, will it be a fairytale ending..?
Paul Hartley as the hapless Buttons causes all manner of mayhem in their attempts to help beautiful Cinderella to win the hand of dashing Prince Charming. Neil Armstrong as the wicked baddie does his best to thwart their plans. Filled with mayhem, magic and live music, it’s a hilarious ride through the traditional fairytale story. So polish your pumpkins, and let Durham’s panto family make your festive season complete.
Dick Whittington @ Theatre Royal, Newcastle
Tuesday 24th November – Sunday 17th January
Joining the panto legends Danny Adams, Clive Webb and Chris Hayward in this year’s production of Dick Whittington will be a quadruple of sensational North East talent – Charlie Hardwick (Emmerdale’s Val Pollard) as Spirit of the Tyne, Pete Peverley (The Bobby Thompson Story, RSC) as Dick’s Cat, legendary panto villain Steve Arnott as dastardly King Rat and Jarrow lassie and West End star Alice Stokoe as Alice Fitzfenwick.
Staged by the same team that has presented the Theatre Royal’s last ten record-breaking and highly-acclaimed pantomimes, Dick Whittington will be another fun-filled, action-packed production full of comedy in abundance.
Featuring plenty of glitz and glamour along with sensational musical numbers and fabulous sets and costumes, Dick Whittington will be a festive treat you won’t want to miss.
Beauty and the Beast @ Bishop Auckland Town Hall

Fame Factory Spotlight bring you this truly magical family pantomime.
The Evil Witch casts a dastardly spell on the handsome prince, turning him into a beast. Tricking the beautiful Belladonna, the Evil Witch forces her to be imprisoned within the home of the Beast.
Belladonna slowly begins to see the man behind the mask and only true love can save the Prince. With bags of comedy mishaps, dances and songs, this is a fast-paced hilarious pantomime that children and adults will love.
Cinderella @ Darlington Civic Theatre
Saturday 5th December – Sunday 10th January

This Christmas you shall go to the ball! Qdos Entertainment, the world’s biggest panto producer, and Darlington Civic Theatre stage the famous rags-to-riches story. Britain’s Got Talent winners Ashleigh and Pudsey will be starring in this year’s pantomime. With their tricks and routines, and described by Simon Cowell as “one of my favourite ever acts”, Ashleigh and Pudsey have won a huge following.
Joining Ashleigh and Pudsey are Brendan Sheerin from Channel 4’s popular TV show Coach Trip, X Factor finalist Niki Evans, and star of children’s TV Dooby Duck.
The Tin Man @ ARC, Stockton
Wednesday 9th December – Thursday 24th December
It is Christmas and a newly minted tin soldier stands on a single leg, having been the last one cast from an old tin spoon. Nearby, he spies a paper ballerina, also standing on one leg, and the soldier falls in love. But the course of true love cannot run smooth and the soldier embarks on an adventure to test and melt the bravest of hearts.
Peut-être Theatre’s production entertains audiences young and old with live music, dance and vibrant characters which combine with a beautiful story for a must-see production for all the family.
